Real Madrid crush Melilla, Isco & Asensio both with a brace

Real Madrid welcomed UD Melilla for the second leg of the Copa del Rey round of 32 on a
festive Thursday afternoon at the Santiago Bernabeu. It was always going to be a tough ask for the visitors after a 4-0 loss at home in the first leg. The match was a perfect opportunity for Blancos’ coach Santiago Solari to test some of his young talents. It proved to be the case as four Castilla players found themselves in the starting lineup: Javi Sanchez, Llorente, Vallejo, and Vinicius Jr. With a few first-team matches under his belt, the highly-rated Brazilian enjoyed a deserved first start at the Bernabeu and repaid Solari’s trust capping an impressive performance
with a goal.

The first half began with Melilla applying pressure on the home team. Keylor Navas gave the home crowd a scare after a bad distribution of the ball found Melilla’s striker Mizzian but his shot was off target. The visitors’ number 8 was involved in most of the action but failed to create an end product. Real Madrid slowly but surely started to take control of the game and the opportunities soon followed. Isco’s curler was just off, while Mariano’s shot was intercepted by a last-ditch tackle from away team’s captain Mahanan. The hosts managed to find the net in the 33rd minute when Asensio made a brilliant run inside the box and nestled the ball into the bottom left corner. The floodgates opened and the Blancos started racking up the goals. Asensio added a 2nd after a great assist by Vinicius Jr. Then, youth prospect Javi Sanchez connected with a great strike to score his first ever goal for Real Madrid just before the break.

More goals followed after half-time. Isco put himself on the scoresheet after a long-range striker found the top left corner of the visitors’ goal and left no chance for goalkeeper Pedro Luis. Vinicius soon joined in, creating his own opportunity on the left wing and finishing confidently. Melilla managed to pull one back through a successfully converted penalty by Yacine Qasmi. The final result was decided in the 83rd minute when Isco added to his tally from a close range.

The ruthless aggregate score of 10-1 sees Real Madrid through to the round of 16 and leaves fans with plenty of optimism this could be the year the King’s cup returns to its royal home.
